The Hotel Bern has a rich history, characterised by “revolutions and renovations”, as the book of the same name puts it. Bern’s Volkshaus was the pride of the working class and radiated far beyond the country’s borders. Today, it continues this legacy both architecturally and socially, as a meeting place for holidaymakers as well as seminar participants and political organisations.

History

THE WORKERS’ CENTRE

Before the new Volkshaus on Berne’s Zeughausgasse, today’s “Hotel Bern”, was opened in 1914, another Volkshaus already stood on this site. It was the oldest in Switzerland – planned over many years and realised in 1893.
